Nestled along the scenic Carse of Stirling, an area renowned for its flat terrain and fertile soil, are the Bryce family with several flourishing farms including West Cambusdrennie, East Cambusdrennie, Cowden, Easter Ross, and Earn. The Bryce family is at the forefront of modern, profitable, and arable farming led by David, his brother Gavin, and David’s son Angus.

The family has embraced cutting-edge technologies to enhance their farming practices and maximise efficiency. Here, we delve into their journey, their collaboration with SoilEssentials, and their commitment to innovation.

David Bryce, a well-known figure in the region, has a rich history in both farming and community engagement. Having previously played rugby with Stirling County, David now actively participates in various committees, including the NFUS, is a steward for the Royal Highland Show, and part of the Fife & Stirling Soil Discussion Group. This deep-rooted connection to the community has not only fostered relationships but also opened doors to opportunities for growth and knowledge sharing.

A Passion Ignited: Angus Bryce’s Journey
For Angus Bryce, now the fourth-generation farmer, his passion for farming truly ignited when he joined the Scottish Association of Young Farmers Clubs (SAYFC). The breathtaking view of Stirling Castle, coupled with the area’s historical significance, further fuelled his desire to carry on the family legacy. Reflecting on this, Angus understands the importance of preserving and nurturing the land for future generations. Pushing the boundaries beyond what has been done before, while also seeking to adapt and improve within current climates.

The Partnership with SoilEssentials
Seeking to explore new ideas and increase productivity on their farms, the Bryce family became customers of SoilEssentials three years ago. With a long-standing relationship, Bob Bain, an area sales representative from SoilEssentials, visited David Bryce in 2020. The younger generation, represented by Angus, was keen on introducing innovative technologies to enhance their farming practices. Their partnership began with the introduction of Trimble guidance using the GFX-750 display with EZ-Pilot Pro assisted steering, which was followed a year later by another GFX-750 display and the upgraded AutoPilot automated steering, alongside Trimble RangePoint RTX correction.

Embracing Precision Farming
The adoption of Trimble’s advanced guidance and steering system has transformed the Bryce family’s farming operations.

As Angus explains, ‘the system’s accuracy has significantly improved our field operations, resulting in savings in seed, reduced fatigue, and enhanced efficiency. Some initial hesitancy towards the technology was quickly dispelled as we both experienced its benefits firsthand.’

The guidance systems have facilitated collaboration between father and son, allowing them to troubleshoot issues and provide support to each other even when physically apart.

Technical Support: A Lifeline for Farmers
SoilEssentials’ dedication to customer support is displayed by their 24/7 operational telephone technical assistance. Angus, who has utilised this service, commends the exceptional support he received, even during late-night farming operations. The ability to remotely access screens and provide real-time assistance ensures that farmers can overcome challenges promptly, thereby minimising downtime and maximising productivity.

Looking Ahead
The Bryce family remains committed to staying ahead of the curve and embracing technology to achieve sustainable farming practices. Angus expresses a keen interest in SoilEssentials’ SKAI spot spraying system, which promises to reduce chemical usage, costs and save time. Furthermore, they are exploring the potential of variable rate seed and fertiliser on their drill, as well as trialling organic fertilisers to reduce their carbon footprint.

Their journey represents a willingness to experiment and innovate, recognising that any failings are learning opportunities and progress is driven by continuous improvement. Together they demonstrate the fusion of tradition and innovation, experience, and enthusiasm in modern farming practices. By leveraging advanced technologies and collaborating with industry leaders like SoilEssentials, they have embraced precision farming to enhance their productivity, efficiency, and environmental stewardship. As they look toward the future, their commitment to excellence and their passion for the land continue to drive them forward. David and Angus embody the spirit of progress and inspire others in the agricultural community to embrace change and strive for a sustainable and prosperous future.
