It will feature sessions on Precision Nitrogen Sensing and Management, Precision Horticulture, Soil Sensing, Satellite and UAV Applications in Agriculture and Big Data Applications in Agriculture among others and is being held at the John McIntyre Conference Centre, The University of Edinburgh from 16th to 20th July.

The Conference is proving to be well supported by academics and industry, not only from Europe but also from North and South America, Asia and Australia. Plenary talks will be given from both an industry and academic perspective. The Conference is very pleased to welcome Dr Matthew Smith from Microsoft’s Computational Laboratory with a special interest in predictive crop and ecological modelling, Professor Ian Yule, a world leader in precision pasture management from Massey University in New Zealand and Mr Philip Wege, a Technology Opportunity Manager at Syngenta with a focus on precision pest management.

There are two parts to the Conference comprising the main ECPA 2017 Conference and a two-day Precision Management of Grassland and Grazing Livestock satellite meeting.  Predictions are that up to  600 delegates will attend if early indications of pre-registrations on the ECPA website are to anything to go by.

An excellent response to the call for papers has been received with over 350 abstracts submitted, which have been whittled down to around 140 oral presentations and 120 posters. In addition, the Grassland satellite conference is shaping up to have 4 keynotes, 30 papers and 25 posters.

Support from industry is gaining pace. A high proportion of papers have a strong industrial collaboration element and for the first time at the conference there will be an Industry Innovation Forum where leading industrial advocates of Precision Agriculture will have the opportunity to directly connect and influence the precision agriculture academic community. Sponsors and exhibitors are steadily increasing and the organising committee are delighted to have support already in place from the Agri-Epi Centre Ltd, AgriMetrics, Department for International Trade, SoilEssentials Ltd, SOYL, Agrisat, Greentronics Ltd, Next Instruments, CENSIS, Satellite Applications Catapult and Delta-T Devices Ltd.

A welcome reception on the first evening at the National Museum of Scotland and dinner at the Assembly Rooms on the second evening will add to the occasion and showcase Edinburgh and  Scotland at its best. The Conference will finish with a ‘Big Day Out’ where delegates will journey for a field visit to The James Hutton Institute and accompanying persons will have the opportunity to take in some sights out with Edinburgh to St Andrews with both groups later converging at Glamis Castle.

The Conference is being organised by a committee of representatives from BSAS (British Society of Animal Science), The James Hutton Institute, Newcastle University, SoilEssentials, SRUC (Scotland’s Rural College) and the Department for International Trade.
