Soil texture is a driving factor here, and therefore the EMI scans can be used to help manage irrigation. Irrigation can be used variably within a field to produce better quality and higher yields.
EMI (electromagnetic induction) is a technique used to measure the electrical conductivity of the soil and determine the soil texture. The EMI scan identifies major soil horizons and from there we test soil zones and can produce soil maps showing percentage clay, silt and sand. These maps are invaluable for understanding the soil properties on your farm. They are used to identify variation and to target, amongst others, irrigation and seed rates.
